Katie (Katie Featherston) and her boyfriend, Micah (Micah Sloat), are a younger couple who just lately moved right into a two-story tract home in suburban San Diego, California. Katie claims that a ghostly presence has haunted her since her youth and believes that it has adopted her to their new home. She hires a psychic, Dr. Fredrichs (Mark Fredrichs), who assesses that she is being haunted not by a ghost, but by a demon. He says the demon feeds off destructive energy, and its intent is to haunt and torment Katie regardless of the place she goes. Before leaving, he advises them not to taunt or talk with the demon, and to contact demonologist Dr. Johan Averies for help. As an alternative, every night, Micah mounts a video digicam on a tripod of their bedroom to file any paranormal activity that might happen while they sleep in the hopes of solving the issue himself.

The digicam manages to seize a number of supernatural phenomena which stay minor at first, together with the bedroom door transferring by itself, and the sound of rapid footsteps downstairs. As Micah consistently taunts the demon, the phenomena gradually develop worse, together with loud bangs and inhuman noises reverberating from deep throughout the house. One evening, Katie awakens to spend several hours standing by the bed looking at Micah while he sleeps and goes outside to sit down on the backyard swing, none of which she remembers the next morning. Katie, already irritated by Micah's making mild of the scenario, becomes irate when Micah brings residence a ouija board regardless of Dr. Fredrichs' warnings. Whereas the two are out of the home, the Ouija board's planchette strikes by itself and a small hearth erupts on the board, extinguishing itself moments later. The following night time, Micah sprinkles talcum powder in the hallway and later the couple finds non-human footprints resulting in the bed room from the attic. Within the attic, Micah finds a burnt photograph of a younger Katie, which was previously thought to have been destroyed in a home fire.

The morning after a very intense haunting, a loud bang is heard and so they uncover the glass over a photograph of them has been smashed with Micah's image scratched underneath. Dr. Averies is overseas when Micah lastly agrees to invite him, so Dr. Fredrichs comes instead. Upon his arrival, Dr. Fredrichs immediately has a way of dread. He apologetically leaves despite their pleas for his assist, stating that his presence is simply making the demon angry. Two nights later, Katie is dragged off the bed and down the hallway by an invisible force. Listening to her screams, Micah gives chase and seizes her again; the next morning they discover a ugly chew mark on her back. Careworn and exhausted, the couple decide to go to a hotel. Later, Micah finds Katie gripping a crucifix so tightly that it bloodies her palm. Micah, angry at a state of affairs he cannot management, burns the crucifix and the picture discovered in the attic. Simply as Micah is set to depart, a all of the sudden calm Katie insists they continue to be at the home, claiming that they are "going to be OK now", her voice sounding odd and flat.

Later that evening, Katie awakens to once once more stand and stare at Micah while he sleeps,when she first stand up the sheets come off of Micah.She goes to the side Micah is on & stands there for about 3 hours. After which she then goes downstairs into the darkness. After a moment of silence, Katie lets out a blood-crudling scream. Micah wakes up and rushes to her, whereas the digital camera records what feels like a wrestle downstairs. The screams out of the blue stop, and a quick silence is followed by the sound of heavy footsteps developing the stairs. Micah's physique is violently hurled on the digicam, knocking it over. Katie slowly walks into view, her clothes soaked with blood, crouching over Micah's body. She then slowly appears to be like on the digital camera with an evil smile and out of the blue lunges toward it, together with her face adopting a demonic look proper earlier than the screen cuts to black.

The film ends with an ending title card stating that Micah's body was discovered a number of days later by the police, and Katie's whereabouts stay unknown.
