In a violent post-apocalyptic society, the drifter Eli has been wandering to west throughout North America for the final thirty years reading a unique e-book that he brings with him. He survives looking small animals and looking for items in destroyed homes and autos to commerce in villages for water and supplies. When he reaches the village dominated by the highly effective mobster Carnegie, the man presents a job to Eli to hitch his gang. Carnegie presses his blind lover Claudia to send her daughter Solara to persuade Eli spending the evening with him. The woman sees the e-book of Eli, and when Carnegie beats up on Claudia, she reveals that Eli has the sought book. Carnegie sends his gang to take the ebook from Eli, but the man is up for safeguarding the e book with his life.
